Do It Today, Don’t Procrastinate

 Do It Today, Don’t Procrastinate

Everyone has a dream, a goal and a responsibility in life. There are times we know what we need to be doing, but we continue to say, “I will do it tomorrow.” It could be next week, next month or forever! The habit is referred to as procrastination. This is one of the greatest barriers to success as it delays us, wastes our time and contributes to our stress. Hence, there is one lesson to be learnt: Do it today, don't wait any longer!

Procrastination

Procrastination is delaying to do it today. Rather than doing a needed job, individuals waste time doing things that have nothing to do with the task, such as watching videos, scrolling through their phone, sleeping more, etc., or simply avoiding the task. So, it's not inherently a bad thing, however it can be a habit over time. This habit is not only bothersome while studying, it causes trouble in developing the career, in achieving personal goals and even in mental peace.

Here's to the procrastination!

There are a number of factors that make people procrastinate. Lack of energy or laziness causes some people to procrastinate work. Others postpone the work because of the perceived difficulty or boredom of the task. Others think they might fail, and they say, “What if I don't do it right?” Sometimes, too, one waits for some time for the ‘right time’ and the ‘right mood' to come and both invariably fail to materialise. As a result, they always delay needed activities.

The Functions of Delaying Work are:

Sometimes, postponing temporarily may give some relief, but it will create trouble in the future. If we delayed things to be done:

  • This is just the start of our work backlog.
  • The pressure is of last minute type.
  • We are rushed and our work quality suffers.
  • Feel bad and embarrassed about ourselves.
  • Our level of confidence decreases.
  • There's a lack of development and improvement.

Procrastination for students may result in low grades, uncompleted work and test anxiety. It can have an impact on the productivity, performance and success of the working population. In personal life it prevents us from developing good habits and realize our dreams.

We should do so now because . . .

a

When we do our work on time we have peace of mind. Tasks done today lift us, give us confidence, make us more organized. Little actions lead to great results in the future. Our future is strong if we start to learn today, learn today, practice today, improve today.

There is only one day, and it is our day. Yesterday's past and what tomorrow will bring, are all uncertain things. Don't put off what can be done until tomorrow because we may miss out on a lot of great things. If we use today we make one step towards success.

It begins with little changes.

The following are easy to do breathing control techniques:

1.Don't do too much, work on small jobs.

Don't decide on completing the job in one go. Do something one step at a time. The first being the more difficult which is when starting it, the second being easier.

2. Set a time limit

3. Remove distractions

Tune out from the television, radio and the telephone and establish a “no talking” area.

4.Record a list of activities to do.

Create a Today I Will' list! Please tick them off as they are read. This gives motivation.

5. Do not aim for perfection!

Does not have to be accurate, 100% at the start. Just start.

6. Take a step back to remind yourself that what you want to achieve

Don't put off; Know the answers to the "why's" for doing the assignment. Whatever you do right now will help you obtain the things you want later.

One little idea can really change the way we think about things.

The idea is this:

  • “If something is going to be good for my future I should get started on it today.”
  • Putting things off is not an idea.
  • It takes up our time and energy. We miss out on chances to do things.
  • We should start today.
  • We should just start doing things today because that is the way to make progress and get where we want to go.

Conclusion

The idea is to start doing things today and that will help us achieve our goals and have a future by taking action every day and starting with small steps and taking it one step at a time and that is the key, to success and it all starts with taking that first step and that first step is to start doing things today.
